# Confusion
Confusion is not knowing what something means.
## Meaning
Confusion happens when [[Meaning|meaning]] is unclear, missing, unstable, contradictory, or not yet understood.
Confusion is not the same as [[Disagreement|disagreement]].
People can be confused because they do not yet understand each other.
People can also understand each other clearly and still disagree.
Confusion is not failure.
Confusion can be a useful signal that a word, source, question, relationship, decision, or action needs [[Clarity|clarity]].
In Joe's Mynd, confusion should usually lead to [[Clarity|clarity]] through [[Language Alignment]], [[Meaning Comparison]], a [[Shared Meaning Check]], [[Meaning Revision]], or a simpler question.
## Source Of Meaning
This note is grounded in Joe's goal for language alignment to reduce avoidable confusion while preserving honest disagreement.
## Relationship Over Time
This note should mature through real moments where Joe, Buddy, or another person notices that the issue is unclear meaning rather than disagreement, conflict, or lack of care.

## Tensions
Confusion can invite curiosity, but it can also create anxiety, delay, projection, or avoidable conflict. Joe's Mynd should help confusion become [[Clarity|clarity]] without pretending every difference is only a misunderstanding.
